Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on the English Translation of Lunyu

The studies on the English translation of Lunyu at home are different from that of abroad.As forstudies abroad,studies on the translation of Lunyu pay more attention to the Confucian educational and itscore concepts and principles while fewer researches on translated versions.But in China,researchers aremainly focus on the studies of various English versions by different translators,translation strategies fromdifferent theoretical perspectives and the translation of core ideas and concepts of Lunyu,such as theconcepts of Ren and Li.

2.1.1 Previous Studies on the English Translation of Lunyu Abroad

After analyzing,clearing up,summarizing the data by retrieving from SpringerLink,Web of Science,Wiley Online Library,CNKI,studies abroad on Lunyu,mainly include the study of Confucian educationalthoughts,Confucianism,its core concepts and key words in Lunyu.

At first,foreign scholars tended to make comments on English versions of Lunyu from a critical pointof view.Tamm C.(1953:47-63)reviewed and summarized all the English versions of Lunyu completedbefore the Second World War,and then composed comments on these versions in the light of history.Later,his research was regarded as the firsthand historical material for studies on Lunyu in the west.Durant,S.W.(1981:109-119)conducted a study on D.C.Lau’s English translation of Lunyu synthetically.He believedthat the translation preface lacks academic value in a broad sense,and that the disadvantage of D.C.Lau’stranslation is that he translated Lunyu without annotations.Subsequently,there was a large number of bookreviews on the English version of Lunyu,which mainly discussed the translation of the text,including theintroduction,notes,historical tables and key terms.The most representative researchers are Benjamin E.Wallhacker(1999:31-51),T.C.KlineⅢ(1999:266),David E.Soles(2000:263-268)and so on.

2.2 Previous Studies on Eco-translatology

With the development of eco-translatology,many scholars have begun to pay more attention to thistheory.Li Yashu&Huang Zhonglian(2005:95-96)thought that eco-translatology was the originalexploration of translation theory and predicted that this theory would promote the development oftranslation theories.

2.2.1 Previous Studies on Eco-translatology Abroad
