So far, Phonics has 300 years’ history. In the 18 century, Phonics has already appeared in the English  education  in  America.  The  teaching  aim  was  making  most  people  read  books.  At that time, the only reading material was Bible. Although people could recite the contents of the book, they did not understand the true meaning of the sentences. In the meantime, there was  a  new  reading  method  called  whole  word  method.  The  whole  word  teaching  method focuses  on  identifying  words  using  context  and  barely  emphasis  on  the  pronunciations (especially  on  the  consonants  and  the  short  vowels).  This  method  claimed  that  the  silent reading  and  comprehension  should  be  paid  more  attention.  Therefore,  a  selection  between the  whole  word  method  and  Phonics  appeared  in  America  causing  big  debate.  In  1960s, Jeanne  Chall,  who  was  a  Harvard  graduate  school  of  education  psychologist,  carried  out  a large investigation, aiming to evaluate all sorts of the literacy teaching method objectively. In  1967,  she  announced  the  result  of  the  study.  In  the  aspects  of  the  words  recognition, spelling, memorizing and reading comprehension, Phonics was better than the whole word method. The result provoked intensive responses at that time and it attracted more people’s attention to Phonics.
