As mentioned before, this book tells the story of oracle bone inscriptions, involvingmany ancient and modern celebrities in this field, such as Wang Yirong of the QingDynasty. Therefore, translation often involves the translation about people’s names andtitles. Because of the great differences between Chinese and Western cultures, it may behard for target language readers to understand the status of these people in this field or themeaning of their titles if there is no introduction about them in the text. At this time, thetranslator needs to adopt various translation methods to accurately convey informationunder the guidance of Skopos theory. Here are some examples:

ST: 清光绪六年（1880）考中进士，授翰林。

TT: In 1880 (the sixth year of Guangxu’s Reign in Qing dynasty), he passed theentrance examination for Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperialexaminations) and was given the official position of Hanlin (a member of the ImperialAcademy).

Conclusion

This report is based on the translation practice of Anecdotes on Oracle BoneInscriptions (excerpt). In view of this translation practice, the author sums up someperceptions , lessons and limitations, hoping to guide the improvement of translation workin the future.

irst of all, the most important thing is that adequate and complete preparation is thebasis for the smooth progress and completion of translation project. In the early stage,upon deciding to choose this translation project, the author first gathered and classified thebackground information related to oracle bone inscriptions, and understood thebackground of the source text, which could lay a good basis for the author to accuratelyunderstand the task and know about the purpose of translation practice. Then the authorfully utilizes related books for reference and resources from network.
