Chapter Two Literature Review 

2.1 Critical Discourse Analysis 
Critical  Discourse  Analysis  was  developed  on  the  basis  of  Critical  Linguistics, which  was  first  brought  up  by  Fowler  et  al.  in  1979  in  Language  and  Control. According  to  Fowler  (1991),  Critical  Linguistics  aims  to  uncover  certain  belief  and value  which  are  embedded  in  the  language  by  studying  the  details  of  the  linguistic structure  in  a  certain  social  and  historical  context  of  the  text.  He  tends  to  reveal  the hidden  ideology  of  the  text  by  adopting  the  theoretical  foundation  of  Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar. However,  there  are  some  shortcomings  in  Critical  Linguistics,  such  as,  it neglects  the  discursive  process  of  discourse  production  and  interpretation  and  it ignores  the  role  of  power  in  social  struggle  etc.  Norman  Fairclough  (1989)  notices shortcomings  of  Critical  Linguistics  and  puts  forward  a  more  comprehensive approach to discourse analysis  —  Critical Discourse Analysis, which is first brought up  in  his  Language  and  Power,  marking  the  formal  birth  of  Critical  Discourse Analysis.  CDA  is  defined  by  many  linguists.  From  the  definitions  of  CDA,  we  can understand what CDA is and what it does.
