4. Results and Discussion

4.1 Linguistic Characteristics of Chinese-English Code-switching inthe Chinese Popular Songs

In the collected 585 songs, there are 1324 instances of Chinese-Englishcode-switching, and the frequencies for each type of code-switching are given in Tables of4-1, 4-2 and 4-3. Moreover, the basic information of code-switching in the collected songsis listed in the Appendix.From Table 4-1, we can see that the EL words (32.02%) take up the largest proportionof switches, sentences (31.80%) and phrases (23.72%) rank the second and third, anddiscourses (9.06%) and letter or letter clusters (3.40%) follow with low frequency.Tables 4-2 shows that in the 424 instances of CS, nouns (64.39%) take up the largestproportion, half of the total switches. Adjectives and verbs rank the second and third, butthey only account for 12.26% and 9.91% respectively. Other categories, numbers, adverbs,conjunctions, and interrogatives account for even smaller proportion.Apart from the ML+EL constituents, another type is EL islands which can be dividedinto three categories: phrases, sentences and discourses. EL phrases can be further dividedinto five types: noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase andprepositional phrase.From Table 4-3, we can see that sentence (49.24%) occupies the largest proportion ofall 855 instances. On the phrase level, VP (19.18%) and NP (15.20%) rank the first andsecond. It indicates that VP and NP occur more frequently than other phrases. Discoursetakes up 14.04% of the EL islands.

Conclusions

In this thesis, the author analyzes the linguistic structures, pragmatic functions andlongitudinal characteristics of Chinese-English code-switching in Chinese pop songs. Thewhole study is primarily descriptive rather than theoretical. In this study, the author selectsthe Chinese-English code-switching in Chinese popular songs in the mainland as theresearch object, using Myers-Scotton’s matrix language framework model, adopting themethod of quantitative statistics, analyzes the frequency and linguistic characteristics ofcode-switching in 585 Chinese pop songs. By Verschueren’s adaptation theory, the authoruses the qualitative method to explore the pragmatic functions of code-switching in
