2.1 An Overview of MOOC
In this part, the origin and development of MOOC are presented in order to make clean the background of MOOC. Then, the author reviews previous studies on MOOC aiming to find out deficiency of previous studies on MOOC. MOOC is short for “Massive Open Online Course”. It is a sort of online education mode which is free for charge, massive, open. It aims to spread courses of high quality into every corner in the word. It is generally acknowledged that the origin of MOOC is from open course based on the internet (Wang & Dou 2014). As early as 2001, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) launched the Open Courseware Movement, which provided learners all over the world with courseware of the university for free. Gradually, world top universities including Harvard University, Yale University and Stanford University have joined the Movement. This movement served as a stepping stone for emergence of MOOC. In 2007, Salman Khan established “Khan Academy” providing videos of different subjects online for free, which accelerated the emergence of MOOC. In 2008,professor Alec Couros from University of Regina of Canada established another open online course called “
Media and Open Education(EC&I 831)” and invited many specialists to take part in remote education. At the same year, Dave Cormier and Bryan Alexander put forward the term MOOC. In 2012, MOOC achieved flouring development. Three important MOOC platforms including Coursera, MITx and Udacity were established. On account of the establishment and promotion of MOOC including Coursera, MITx and Udacity, MOOC got the attention of people all over the world and millions of students learnt by MOOC.

2.2 Overview of Multimodal Discourse Analysis
In this part, multimodal discourse analysis is overviewed. To begin with, appearance and development of multimodal discourse analysis are presented in order to work out the development situation of multimodal discourse analysis at home and abroad. Then, studies on multimodal discourse analysis and studies on multimodal discourse analysis of classroom discourse are reviewed attempting to explore the limitation of the previous studies in this field.
