3.4 Research Structure
For this paper, we will do a case study by collecting and analyzing secondary data from international organizations such as the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). The goal of this organization is to promote a way for governments to exchange opinions, to find answers to an occurring situation and to find appropriate solutions to be able to formulate policies needed. For instance, numerous environmental and social issues are addressed by the OECD. In our case study, we focus on their yearly employment outlook publications as well as on their economic surveys. Another resource is the IMF (International Monetary Fund), an international organization having a lot of member countries that are trying to follow macroeconomic policies, for example policies that could have an effect on currency exchange rates etc., with the help of having a global financial system. After the East Asian financial crisis, the IMF felt obliged to start several programs as response to it. Later on, we will elaborate more on what kind of programs these were as well as in how far they were useful or not. The IMF is publishing reports such as “world economic outlook” yearly. Furthermore, we will analyze data from the ILO (International labor organization). This is an agency from the UN that deals with labor issues and is doing research of how many people are employed around the world.
In combining and analyzing this data together with theories and findings from several economists and sociologists, for example Paul Krugman and Manuel Castells (see references for full list), other theoreticians in related fields, and from economical and governmental institutions such as the Korean Association of Economics, we are trying our utmost to reach the goals of this case study in putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. This will help us to better understand the material in showing the relationship between globalization and the labor market in East Asia by focusing on the East Asian Events in 1997 - 1998. In the end, we can support our findings by concrete statistics, figures and tables and can come to a conclusion. To summarize our approach, please see Figure 3.1 on the following page:
