摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文是一项实证研究,通过英语致使移动构式测试,考察了来自三个不同英语水平的 90 名中国英语学习者对英语致使移动构式的习得情况,并试图厘清中国英语学习者习得英语致使移动构式的程度与英语语言水平之间的关系,进一步确定中国英语学习者对英语致使移动构式的习得顺序。
Chapter 1 Introduction
As a reflection of the human experience, the caused-motion construction is widelystudied by linguists from different schools. The traditional approaches mainly hold that thesyntax is determined by the predicative verb. However, the language meaning, from the viewof Cognitive Linguistics, is closely associated with both human experience and cognition. Inessence, the caused-motion construction is prevalent in English. Nevertheless, the previousrelated studies mainly concentrate on the structural analysis, and few studies touch on L2acquisition of English caused-motion construction. To this end, the present study will seek toexplain L2 acquisition of English caused-motion construction (hereinafter CMC) by ChineseEFL learners with different proficiency levels. Subsequently, the acquisitional order ofdifferent subtypes of English CMC in the Chinese classroom setting was incorporated into theinvestigation. The very first chapter, namely the introduction, provides a foundation for theempirical study, including the research rationale, the research objectives, the significance ofthe study and the organization of this study.
1.1 Research Rationale
Three reasons underlie the selection of the two research questions to be addressed in thepresent study. First, the caused-motion construction is the reflection of the experience ofhuman life and it is popular in languages. The construction as a linguistic entity has recentlybeen favored as one of the most debated topics in linguistic studies. A cursory review of theliterature suggests that previous studies in this area may fall into four categories: one is thetransformation approach, which takes the stand that the derived caused-motion expressionsfrom an underlying structure are composed of two propositions (Chomsky, 1981; Fillmore,1971; Lakoff, 1977). The second is the projection principle, airing the view that the syntacticform is mainly determined by the predicative verb. The third is the compositional approachthat proposes the “co-predication” of verb and preposition (Gawron, 1985; Pustejovsky, 1991,Rappaport and Levin, 1991). The fourth is the Cognitive approach, based on the cognitiveprinciples of human beings (Goldberg, 1995, 2001; Langacker, 1987, 1991; Haiman, 1978;Croft & Cruise, 2004; Zhou, 2007; Pan & Zhang, 2005). To my best knowledge, all differentschools of thought are still working on their solutions for the issue addressed, thereforepresenting a need for the present study.

1.2 Research Objectives
It is well-known that language is the window of human ideas and their bodily experience. Both English and Chinese speakers share some common cognitive ways related to bodilyexperience, resulting in semantic overlapping between Chinese and English. Due to differentconstruals of the world and their different cultures, there exist some differences at their syntactic levels from the perspective of representations. For CMC, the differences betweenEnglish and Chinese outweigh the similarities. So the way in which Chinese EFL learnersacquire English CMC and how they construe it fall into the research target. With this, theresearch questions are proposed as follows:1) Will the Chinese EFL learners’ comprehension of English CMC develop alongsidetheir general English language proficiency? And do Chinese EFL learners comprehend theprototypical sense of English CMC better than the non-prototypical sense
