As we all know Of Mice and Men is a classical and powerful novella which was written by an America author—John Steinbeck, who created this wonderful work based on his real experience in the period of American Depression(Stephen, 2011). For me, I suppose the intention of this story is not to present what life is like in period of American Depression in 1930s, or the tough work condition in a ranch, but to remind us of what nature is like —human’s nature.
The Of Mice and Men begins with a lot of scenery description which created a sad and peaceful atmosphere for the whole story(Xiaocai, 2011). Set off by an abundance of lifeless surroundings, like the yellow sands, narrow pool, golden foothill slopes and as well as the noiselessly rabbit, the two menemerges(Serenazhao, 2015) . It is coincidental that in the last scenario, it was also the place where George Milton and Lennie Small first appears from the path and came into the opening by the green pool. In my opinion, Steinbeck wish this dirty world can be simple and honest, so he deliberately to set the peaceful and naturally scenery as the background at the first and last scene(Xiaocai, 2011).
Apart from the surrounded environment which paved a guideline for the whole story, Steinbeck mainly focused on the miserable destiny of two homeless migrant ranch workers by shaping two totally different figures— George Milton and Lennie Small(Charlotte, 1995), the former one is an smart, intelligent but small man, however, Lennie Small as the best friend of George Milton, he has a big body but limited mental abilities. At the same time, they had the same dreams, which support them to carry on and forget about the painful they suffered. The dream were mentioned many times in their conversation. For example, ‘O.K. Someday—we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have alittle house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and—” “An’ live off the fatta the lan’,” Lennie shouted. “An’ have rabbits.’ The hope for the future blueprint is repeated in their conversion, even convince George himself. According to a lot of scene in this film, owing lots of rabbits is the biggest dream for Lennie Small(Joseph,1963), every time he suffered from some unfair things, he always comfort himself by reminding himself of owning a house and having lots of rabbits.
Why the little mice died in the hand of the people who love and care them the most? Why the old man’s disabled dog was killed, in my thought, Steinbeck want to let the death of the mouse and dog represent the destiny of Lennie Small, who has the same fate as this animals in a crude world(Peter, 1958). Even though Lennie Small is quite huge and tall, he still cannot adopt to live independent in the real world. The death is inevitable, just like thedead mouse which took and threw by George across the pool to the other side, among the brush. Like the aged, evil-smiling dog, which was Candy’s only friend, was persuaded by Carlson to shoot(Peter, 1958).
In this story also occurs a key important female character—Curley's wife, which has no name. In this film,
