athomed and illuminating (Chen Guying, 2003). Although Gu translates it with a “scholary style” and Waley translates it like “floating clouds and flowing water”, both translations represent some aspects of the style of Tao Te Ching. Different translations from the same original text are mainly caused by four reasons. Firstly, there are many different
Reference books and annotation versions of Tao Te Ching along the history. Translators will have different pre-understandings if they choose different original texts. Secondly, the translator’s understanding towards the original text is influenced by Chinese cultural knowledge, personal experiences and Chinese proficiency. These factors will make translator’s interpretation deviate from the original meaning of the text. Therefore, different translators create different translations. Thirdly, the words in the original text change some of their structure, meaning or usage. Even some words disappear in the history. Finally, polysemy of Chinese characters also brings linguistic obstacles to translation, which causes problems such as mistranslation, overtranslation and so on.
