Bock  (1986)  was  the  first  one  who  got  experimental  evidence  for  the  syntactic priming  effect.  In  her  study,  participants  were  presented  with  a  prime  sentence  and then  asked  to  produce  a  target  sentence.  It  was  found  that  participants  who  were primed  showed  a  significant  tendency  to  reuse  the  previous  sentence  structure  they had  just  heard.  For  example,  participants  primed  with  a  DOC  such  as  “the  boy  gave the girl an apple” are more likely to produce a DOC (e.g. John sent Mary a letter) than a DC (John sent  a letter  to Mary).  In  addition to  the ditransitive construction,  such a tendency to reuse the prime structure to express the target message has been found for a variety of syntactic structures and this structural priming effect cannot be attributed to  overlap  in  certain  closed  class  words  like  prepositions  or  open  class  words  like adjectives  (Pickering  &  Branigan  1998),  to  semantic  or  prosodic  similarities  (Bock and Loebell 1990.
