On the basis of Halliday’s idea, Strevens (1977) added his own thought into it and put forward a new definition that ESP is a kind of teaching in which the aims and the  content  are  decided  by  the  practical  and  functional  English  requirements  of  the learner.  And  later,  Strevens(1988)  proposed  that  ESP  is  the  English  language  teaching which  is  designed  to  satisfy  the  specified  needs  of  learners.  Most  of  the  present researchers  all  contain  that  the  definition  by  Strevens  is  the  most  effective  one.  State clearly, ESP is a kind of approach to language learning and the learner needs are closely connected  with  it.  Similarly,  Hutchinson  and  water’s  definition  emphasized  greatly  on learners’ need, and aimed to show that the core of ESP teaching was drawing attention to natural needs(Hutchinson and Water’s,1984). In other words, the concept has a close relationship  with  the  learner’s  needs  and  should  be  carried  out  according  to  the  need analysis.  According to the previous contributions, Cai Jigang (2004) points that ESP is kind of English relating with one specific occupation or discipline. In terms of ESP course, it is  an  English  course  designed  as  the  learners’  specific  purposes  and  special  needs.  No matter what definition it holds, it all focuses on learners’ needs. ESP is quite an effective approach to language teaching of one specific discipline. The term ESP in this thesis is most  close  to  Cai  Ji Gang’s  ESP  concept,  which  focus  on  the  certain  area  combined language learning and professional skills that occupational affairs needs together.

2.2 Tourism English Teaching
