Chapter 2 Theoretical Foundation and
methodology
Domestication and foreignization were first put forward by Lawrence Venuti as twotranslation strategies. Domestication means that the translator leaves target readers in peaceand brings the writer to them and foreignization refers to the translator leaves the writer inpeace and brings target readers to him. Both of them have their solid theoretical foundations.Domestication’s theoretical foundation is Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory andforeignization’s theoretical foundation is Venuti’s Foreignization Theory. In this section, theauthor will discuss the theoretical foundation Functional Equivalence Theory andForeignization Theory. In the end the author will introduce the methodology in this thesis aswell.
2.1 Domestication and Foreignization
In tradition realm, domestication and foreignization are two important translationmethods used by translators to solve two basic problems in translation: linguistic differencesand cultural disparity, domestication is target-reader oriented while foreignization issource-language oriented. However, in the translation process, translators are often in adilemma, because it is hard to make a choice between domestication and foreignization. Fromone side, the translator must adhere to the source text on linguistic level as well as culturallevel; from another side, the translator should ensure the translation familiar andunderstandable to the target readers. Domestication and foreignization are two differenttranslation methods, which have their own peculiarity and importance. In this section, weshall mainly deal with the definition, origin and merits and shortcomings of domestication andforeignization, as well the relationships between them.Domestication localizes source text into target language and takes target readers asdestination. The strange and unusual expressions to the target readers are exploited and turnedinto expressions that acceptable and fluent for the target readers. Foreignization takes theoriginal text as destination and it keeps the foreign and original flavor as much as possible inorder to keep culture diversity and transfer the source language and culture into the targetreaders. Domestication and foreignization, the two translation terms were first proposed byVenuti. He defined “Domestication refers to bring the source culture closely to the targetreaders, making the text acceptable and familiar.”

2.2 Functional Equivalence Theory
Eugene Nida is the greatest influence to domestication. He is the most importantsupporter of domestication. His Functional Equivalence Theory is the representative ofDomestication theory. He is the famous American translation theorist and consultant to theAmerican Bible Society.Equivalence is a critical issue in translation. Many well-known theorists have researchedit and put forward their own point of views. Nida came up with “dynamic equivalence” at first, and in latter translation, he changed it into “functional equivalence” in order to describetranslation more exactly and thoroughly. Funct
