With the development of studying the  function  criterion  on  the  classification  of  words,  many  scholars  have  carried  on  a more extensive and in-depth exploration of specific problems of various kinds of lexical category.  For  example,  in  mandarin,  the  function  of  adjectives  in  sentences  is  to  be attribute or predicate. 2.2 The Discussion about Word Class in the 1950s  
In the history of studies on classification of words, there is an important period of time,  which  is  the  heated  discussion  about  word  class  in  1950s,  during  which  many scholars propose their viewpoints on whether words in Mandarin can be classified into different  types  or  not  and  what  the  criterion  is  if  there  is  a  possibility  of  classifying words in Mandarin. At the beginning of 1950s, Conrad, a former Soviet Russian linguist, published an article  called  “On  the  Chinese  Language”,  in  which  he  points  out  that  Mandarin  have morphological changes in a narrow sense and words in Mandarin can be classified into different  types.  What  kind  of  auxiliary  a  word  may  need  in  a  sentence  can  also determine the part of speech of this word. Gao Mingkai (1953) is against the opinion of Conrad.  He  persists  that  there  only  exist  the  distinction  between  content  words  and function  words  in  mandarin.  And  surely  there  is  no  concrete  classification  of  part  of speech  for  content  words  in  mandarin.  The  way  to  learn  grammar  in  Mandarin  should not  follow  the  route  of  western  countries,  which  is  totally  based  on  part  of  speech  of words.  However,  during  this  period  of  time,  few  scholars  agree  with  Gao Mingkai(1953),  and  they  do  believe  that  content  words  in  Mandarin  can  be  classified into  different  types.  But  the  problem  is  that  their  criteria  for  classification  are  various and they don’t reach an agreement.
