Chapter Four Results and Discussion


4.1 Preference of students’ participation behaviors
According to Table 4.1, in Item 1, if the students do not agree with the teachersor their classmates, 46.2% of them will speak out loudly. Among them, 1.9% of themstrongly agree it and 44.3% of them agree it. 31.1% of them will keep silent. 22.7% ofthem are neutral. In Item 2, 78.4% of the students like to answer the questionstogether with their classmate while only 10.6% of them dislike it. In Item 3, 54.1% ofstudents are passive in class. Only being forced, can they answer the teacher’squestion. 32.6% of them can answer questions initiatively. In Item 4, the promotion oforal English is mainly from the assiduous practice, so 73.4% of the students arewilling to talk with their classmates in oral English class. Only 6.1% of them are not willing to talk with their classmates. In Item 5, however, when they discuss with theteacher, 48.8% of the students are willing to discuss with the teachers. 17.4% of themare not willing to discuss with the teachers. 33.7% of them have no idea about that,which may because they never or rarely have the opportunities to discuss with theirteachers in oral English class. In Item 6, when the teacher and other students give theiropinions, 80% of the students can listen to them seriously. Only 4.2% of them can notlisten to them carefully. In Item 7, in oral English class, 72% of the students like toparticipate in group work while 9.9% of them do not like to take part in group work.In Item 8, in the oral English class, when talking about a topic, 58.3% of students arewilling to talk with each other in the way of debate, and 14.4% of them do not like theway of debate. In Item 9, 65.1% of the students are more willing to give comments onmovies and pictures while 12.2% of them are not willing to that activity.

Conclusion


The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent the main factors affectstudents’ participation in oral English class and what are the preferred classroomparticipation behaviors of students in oral English class. As a result, some majorfindings of the survey can be summed up as follows:There are several kinds of preference of students’ participation behaviors in oralEnglish class. In the oral English class, it seems that they like to listen to othersseriously, answer the questions together with their classmates, talk with theirclassmates in English, participate in group work and practice their spoken English inthe form of dialogue. The present study also finds that students’ factors and teacherfactors affect students’ participation to a large extent while environmental factors andcultural factors also play a minor role.
