Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
English skills are composed of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating. Thecultivation of five language skills to language learners is emphasized during the whole processof English Language Teaching. Writing is an effective way to show English language learners’language proficiency. It is widely acknowledged that the higher the learners’ writing ability is,the more proficient the learner is. Besides, writing has been one of the important parameters tomeasure English language learners’ overall language proficiency, which could be found fromthe composition scores accounting for in various English tests, like College English Test Band4 and Band 6 (hereafter CET-4, CET-6). In addition, a series of writing procedures is necessaryto write a good English composition, like organizing materials appropriately, drawing theconclusion etc. Also, the organization of arguments in writing should be highlighted. Thus, writing is somewhat conducive to the cultivation of language learners’ problem-solving andanalytical abilities. Therefore, writing is of great significance for language learners. It is widely accepted that lexical chunks are frequently used by language learners inwriting. In Wray (2008), lexical chunk refers to a lexeme, which crosses word boundaries. Amultitude of studies (Howarth, 1998; Biber, 2009) related to the lexical chunks have beenundertaken in the past, they have proposed that in composition writing, lexical chunks arefrequently used by English language learners, which could enhance learners’ performance.Leedham et al. (2013) have found out that the skilled language user commands a repertoire oflengthy chunks of language, while the lower-level user struggles with short sequences. Schmittand Mc Carthy (1997:230) argue that “the mind uses an abundant resource (memory to storeprefabricated chunks of language) to compensate for a limited one (processing capacity).”In Second Language Acquisition (hereafter SLA), researches into lexical chunks haveproliferated in recent years, particularly since computer technology has made it possible toconduct studies on lexical chunks through a large empirical database more effectively.Weinert’s study (1995) has shown that lexical chunks have contributed to the improvement ofthe fluency and appropriateness of communication. According to Zhen (2009), non-nativespeakers still have difficulty in expressing their ideas properly in spoken language, althoughthey obtain a large size of vocabulary, sentence patterns, and grammar etc.

1.2 Significance and purpose of the study
The primary purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between the use of lexicalchunks in English majors’ expository writings and their writing proficiency. That is to say, itaims to examine whether the lexical chunks would facilitate English writing. The study alsoaims to investigate how each category of the lexical chunks (polywords, phrasal constraints, and sentence builders) are used by different language learners in composition writing. This study contributes a bit to an understanding of the role played by lexical chunks inexpository writings. While a number of studies related to the present study have beenundertaken in the past, the focus of the earlier works were based predominantly on thecharacteristics of the lexical chunks from the perspective of linguistics. Also, researchers’attention has m
