2 Literature Review
Before introducing previous studies of turn-taking, it is necessary to make sure what turn is, what adjacency pairs are and what turn-taking rule is. So this part will firstly explain the concept of turn, of adjacency and of turn-taking, and then the relevant research into turn-taking will be explained in detail.
2. 1 Turn
Turn is the basic structural unit of daily conversation. It is what a speaker says in a conversation from the starting of the talk until the end of the talk or the interruption by others. Conversation is an orderly connection process. Without a prior arrangement, the participants of the conversation talk by turn. A turn can be made up of different language items, such as words, phrases, clauses, sentences and sentence groups. (He Qiran, 2011: 124) For example:
the turn is a word
  A: Well they’re not comin.
  B: Who. (T)
A: Uh Pum, Unless the can find somebody.
The turn is a phrase.
A: Oh I have the – I have one class in the evening.
   B: On Mondays? (T)
   A: Yeah, uh, Wednesday.
   B: Uh, Wednesday.
A: En it’s like a Mickey Mouse Course.
The turn is a sentence.
A: You been down here before yeh haveenche.
   B: ……
A: Where the sidewalk is? (T)
   B: Yeah.
   A: Whur it ends, (T)
B: Goes all away up there?
A: They come up tuh there.
2. 2 Adjacency Pairs
Adjacency pairs are a fundamental unit of conversational structure. They are sequences of two utterances as the result of turn-taking. The two utterances are ordered as a first part and second part. A particular first part requires a particular second part., e.g. offers requiring acceptance or rejections, greetings requiring greetings, questions requiring answers, etc. (Yang Zhong, 2002: 116) For example:
    A: Can I help you?
    B: Sure.
However, not all first parts are immediately followed by second parts. It often occurs that the answer is delayed by another pair of question an answer. For example:
A: Can I go out now?
B: Have you finished your homework?
      A: Yes.
      B: Yes.
