People may often promptly andsubconsciously comprehend sentences, utterances, or even discourses, yet they are scarcelyrequired to clarify their comprehension accuracy and nature. So,sentence comprehension, as the basic form and core of language comprehension, is ofsignificance and worth exploring. The fundamental aim of sentence comprehension is toacquire sentence meaning or even intention by means of sentence structures.Sentence meaning is surely associated with the meanings of its words, while it is notmerely the total computation of words via constructing sounds, letters, and lexical meanings;it is related to the semantics of this sentence, too (Scovel: 59). And, for a normal sentence toreach an acceptable standard, it has to adhere to grammar, meaning, logic, and the like (Shu,2000: 47). Besides, sentence should be as simple and common as possible. Otherwise, peoplewill get confused or even desperate with sentences such as “The horse raced past the barnfell.” “The man the girl the boy met believed laughed.” and “While Anna dressed the babyplayed in the crib.” These feelings appear to be that there are many unknown ideas occupyingthe mind with forces. Actually, just as the course of comprehending language is to processlanguage information, so is that of understanding sentence.But, how do language learners, in particular English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL)Chinese learners, comprehend English sentences in general? What strategies do they oftenapply? What are the possible processes and mechanisms of sentence comprehension? Whatare the potential influential factors of sentence comprehension? And, what else can beachieved about sentence processing? A sound knowledge and exploration of them is surely aneffective step to help to learn a second language (L2) well.Toward the questions above, scholars have undertaken different efforts and haveachieved different results.
