thesis, two kinds of English GP sentence with the direct object—subject (DOS)ambiguity and the main verb—reduced relative verb (MVRRV) ambiguity (borrowed andadapted from Chen, 1998; Christianson et al., 2001; etc.) are tapped to investigate sentencecomprehension, such as “When Anna dressed the baby played on the bed.” and “The horseraced past the barn fell.” To preview their reliability, it is with positive values but in need ofimprovement (r=0.72/0.75) by the split half measure of the Statistical Product and ServiceSolutions of the sixteenth version (SPSS 16.0). And, their difficulty is reasonable (P=0.36).From literature on sentence processing, comprehension, and representation, especially onGP sentences, there are two kinds of theories: traditional theories (shown in Jiang, 2000;Ferreira et al., 2002; etc.) and the good-enough (GE) approach (Christianson et al. 2001, 2006;Ferreira et al., 2001, 2002; Ferreira & Patson, 2007; Christianson, 2008; etc.). The formerhold that to process sentences is to make computations, that meaning is to be derived bycompositionality, and that language input representations are global, elaborate, and precise,whilst the latter maintains that processing language is at times local, that processing sentencesis GE, and that semantic representations are usually not full. Yet, by observation, reflection,and theory integration, this thesis holds that the GE approach can be a particular and powerfulstage of traditional theories in the process of understanding GP sentences for strong subjectiveexpectations from the complexity and deviation of GP sentences, processing resourcerestrictions, biased schemata, heuristics, similar experience, thinking-set, time pressure, etc.By combining the comprehension processes and results, GP sentences can be bettercomprehended and studied.Meanwhile, sentence comprehension is said to be affected by a number of factors. But,cognitive styles especially from the field-dependence-independence (FDI) dimension andEnglish grammaring reinforcement (EGR) are regarded to reflect and improve GP sentencedisambiguation and comprehension here in that sentence comprehension can be affected byboth linguistic and cognitive aspects.FDI or field cognitive styles mainly identified by Cognitive Style Figures Test (CSFT) inChina are believed to have different impact on language learning and teaching, in particularon foreign language (FL) or L2 learning. Generally, field independent (FI) individuals arebetter at cognitive restructuring abilities, which can benefit GP sentence comprehensionrequiring the disembedding, separation, or disambiguation ability, whilst field dependent (FD)individuals at social and interpersonal skills; FI individuals tend to rely on internal referenceframes as the basis of information processing and are high in personality autonomy, whereasFD individuals on external reference frames and low in personality independence.To comprehend GP sentences, learners have to integrate visually perceptual and verbalimpressions coming from strong sentential complexity or embedding effect. Each GP sentencefunctions as a complex field and exerts such an impressive influence on the sentential partsthat any endeavor to implement the elaborate analytic restructuring ability to locate a simpleunit without being affected by the field will turn out to be hard.
