ning. In order to get a clear understandingof the current situation of education, the following two sections will state two main problemsbriefly. Examination-oriented Education SystemThe examination-oriented education system has been prent for a long time in senior highschool in China. In this background, the teachers cannot be completely independent of thisdefective system, because in order to finish the required teaching content of the textbook in aspecified term, they have to devote everything in the classroom to equipping students withnecessary language knowledge and developing their skills of getting a high score in exam.Furthermore, getting a high score, to a great extent, not only indicates that both teachers andstudents are “good”, but also reflects the good reputation of their parents and schools, and at lastthe high-score students will get much affection the teachers and admiration otherstudents. While for those who getting low scores means inability, bring much stress and invite lowself-esteem, embarrassment, even isolation.Educated by this system, the students nowadays are always trained to get high scores in avariety of examinations, and too many of them feel not much interest in English. As a result, most of the teachers have gotused to feeding students the knowledge that probably will appear in the exam through thedesigned steps, and the students also have been accustomed to accepting their teacher’s feeding.Without teacher’s prompt and sufficient assistance, students will feel at a loss what to do, loseconfidence and fail to establish their aims in learning, so such education produces passive learners. This teacher-centered classroom teaching style emphasizes on teaching language knowledge, neglects to develop students’ language skill, attitudes to learning, learning strategies, and togetherwith the language knowledge form the fundamental requirements of the new English curriculumthat aiming at developing students’ comprehensive language competence. (高中英语课程标准,2003, 2) Besides, this teaching style hinders students managing learning process effectivelyand exploring their learning potentiality. The two problems mentioned above are unfavorable to developing the students’ autonomy, and certainly results in they stepping in the mistakable area in English learning, which mayprevent the students becoming an autonomous learner. Because in the examination-orientededucation system, much attention is paid on the teacher’s teaching not the students’ learning. Moreover, the senior high schools and teachers always take excessive consideration on students’scores and extrinsic motivation, which misleads the students and parents to emulate the highscores. A lot of educators and p
