Antaki  &  Sue  (1998:  2)  regard  identity  as  the  expression  of  category  with  abundant characteristics,  attribution  or  as  the  membership.  We  thought  this  point  of  view  on identity  will  neglect  the  process  of  identity  construction.  From  the  perspective  of identity  construction  Kroskrity  (2000:111)  defines  identity  as  the  language construction  to  speakers’  membership  in  one  or  more  social  organizations  and categories.  This  definition  emphasizes  the  important  of  language  in  identity construction. In the field of linguistics the typical definitions are made by Zimmerman (1998:  87-91)  and  Tracy  (2002:  17-20).  Zimmerman  regards  identity  as  contextual elements  in  communication  and  put  forward  the  definition  of  identity-as-context.

Chapter Four   Research Results and Analysis 

Last  chapter  points  out  the  research  questions  and  introduces  the  research methods and research procedures. This chapter aims to talk about the variability and negotiability of telephone interviewers’ identity construction in telephone interviews. Then verify the adaptability of this pragmatic phenomenon. This study classified the interviewers’  identities  into  the  following  three  categories:  category  of  authority identity, category of companionate identity, category of cooperative identity. Then this chapter  demonstrates  the  context  adaptation  of  interviewers’  identity  construction which includes physical adaptation, social adaptation and mental adaptation.
