Chapter One   Introduction 

1.1   Background of the Study 
With  the  opening  of  the  10th  International  Pragmatic  Conference  (8-13  July,  2007; Goteborg,  Sweden)  identity  became  one  of  the  hot  topics  from  the  perspective  of pragmatic.  As  the  10th  National  Pragmatic  Conference  held  in  Nanjing  (20-23  July, 2007) researches about identity in pragmatic were discussed through special topic by scholars. Jing Xiaoping and Chen Xinren(2007) held that identity and its construction in  pragmatic  had  become  a  new  topic  in  the  research  of  Chinese  pragmatics.  At  the meeting of 11th International Pragmatic Conference (12-17 july, 2009) the tendency of identity research became more prominent. Professor Janet Holmes made the keynote speech on the topic of identity construction and five groups gave a deep discussion on this  theme.  Jiang  Xiaohong  and  Zhou  Rong  made  their  points  on  this  conference review.  Identity  construction  which  is  considered  as  a  complex  concept  including communicators’ character, status, power and specific contextual factors has caught the attention of many scholars. Ethnographic approach and CDA approach were taken to study the daily talk, institutional talk and narrative talk which involve the construction analysis of manipulative identity, interactive identity and relational identity. From this perspective  identity  performance  and  identity  construction  will  still  be  the  hot  topic during  the  10th  International  Pragmatic  Conference  and  12th  International  Pragmatic Conference.  The  research  of  identity  construction  is  not  only  the  center  of  social science (Bamberg, et al., 2007: 1) but also a preceding subject in pragmatic research (Yuan, 2013a).  Under  such  academic  circumstance  this  study  chooses  the  construction  of  pragmatic identity  as  its  topic.  Based  on  the  telephone  interviews  data  this  study  attempts  to analysis  the  telephone  interviewers’  pragmatic  identities  and  their  construction.  By means  of  studying  how  contextual  factors  influence  the  construction  of  pragmatic identities this paper tend to make a deeper research on identity.

1.2   Significance of the Study
