Chapter One   Introduction

1.1   Research Background 
In  society,  when  writing  on  papers  or  speaking  face  to  face,  people  are  believed  to express  themselves  clearly  and  precisely.  But,  frankly  speaking,  it  is  not  always  the  truth. Whether people can express themselves exactly or inexactly all depends on the language they use.  When  people  don’t  want  to  express  themselves  clearly,  they  tend  to  make  use  of  fuzzy language  or  hedges.  Fuzziness  is  one  of  the  characteristics  of  natural  language.  For  human beings,  the  fuzziness  of  both  the  subjective  world  and  the  objective  world  determines  the fuzziness of people’s thinking and language. Thus, using hedges is a common phenomenon in language communication, which is inherent to language use. Generally  speaking,  it  is  supposed  to  be  serious  in  writing  civil  judgments.  Civil judgments  lay  emphasis  on  the  reasoning  of  evidence,  the  explaining  of  reasons  and  the balancing of reasons and laws. The language used is simple and solemn. It is supposed not to be  vague  or  fuzzy.  However,  it’s  not  the  case.In  fact,  hedges  are  frequently  used  in  civil judgments.  One  of  the  reasons  why  hedges  are  used  in  civil  judgments  is  to  make  the meaning  expressed  clearer.  This  thesis  aims  to  analyze  hedges  in  Chinese  civil  judgments based  on  the  Adaptation  Theory,  which  can  not  only  enrich  the  theory,  but  extend  the previous studies of hedges.

1.2   Significance of the Study 
Language  is  a  medium  of  communication.  Hedges,  as  an  important  pragmatic  strategy, play a significant role in language use. Up to now a great number of studies on hedges have been  conducted  from  different  aspects,  such  as  pragmatic  principles,  discourse  analysis, intercultural analysis and semantics, etc. However, there are few studies of hedges in Chinese civil  judgments.  They  haven’t  been  paid  much  attention  to.  Thus,  this  thesis  is  of  great significance in both theoretical and practical aspects. Theoretically,  it  can  enrich  the  studies  of  hedges,  pragmatics  and  discourse  analysis.  Itmakes a wider comprehension of hedges and its definition, classification and functions.
