rs  have  different  opinions  about  the “right” number of the rhetorical relations as the number is not fixed but open. Maite Taboada (2006) makes a study on one of these proposals-whether discourse markers (connectives)  are  signals  or  not  of  rhetorical  relations.  It  is  found  in  the  study  that genre-specific factors may have influences on which relations are signaled and which are not.  Along  with  a  wide  range  of  application  of  RST  in  areas  of  discourse  analysis, theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics, there are also comparison  to  other  approaches  and  criticisms  about  the  theory  itself  in  the  above areas.  Taboada  and  Mann  (2006)  review  some  of  the  discussions  about  the  theory itself,  especially  addressing  issues  of  the  reliability  of  analyses  and  psychological validity,  together  with  a  discussion  of  the  nature  of  text  relations.  Besides,  areas  for further  research  are  also  proposed.  Taboada  and  Mann  (2006)  write  a  follow-up article  which  makes  a  review  of  the  most  significant  applications  of  the  theoretical framework  of  RST  in  several  areas  including  discourse  analysis,  theoretical linguistics,  psycholinguistics,  as  well  as  computational  linguistics.  This  article  also makes a list of useful resources for work within the analytical framework RST.

2.2 Previous Studies of Cover Letters 
There are plentiful researches about cover letters, especially English cover letters from different perspectives which are listed as follows.  Many studies have been made from the perspective of genre. Xie Yeping (2004) and  Zhang  Hui  (2007)  both  make  a  contrastive  Genre  Analysis  of  totally  60  Cover Letters in Chinese and English. In this study Swales’s Move-Step analysis model and Hasan’s Generic Structure Potential (GSP) analysis model are adopted to analyze the generic  structure  of  the  letters.  Shi  Xiaoqi  (2015)  makes  a  genre  analysis  of  60 English  cover  levers  divided  in  two  groups  by  Chinese  undergraduates.  The  study compares  the  two  groups  of  letters  from  the  perspectives  of  move  patterns  and language features with the aim to find out the move differences between the two types of letters.
