sp;significances  which  are illustrated in the following two points.  On  one  hand,  Rhetorical  Structure  Theory  has  been  confirmed  to  be  applied  as an  analytical  tool  for  different  types  of  written  texts  in  various  lengths.  In  China, many  scholars  have  been  engaged  in  contrastive  rhetorical  studies  of  political speeches,  news,  editorials,  argumentative  writings,  blogs  and  the  like  between Chinese  and  English.  By  analyzing  the  cover  letters  on  the  basis  of  Rhetorical Structure Theory this study will make an enrichment of RST-based researches. On  the  other  hand,  by  further  exploring  the  rhetorical  relations  of  the  cover letters  in  Chinese  and  English,  a  clear  recognition  and  a  better  understanding  of  the rhetorical  structures  of  Chinese  and  English  cover  letters  can  be  obtained.  What’s more,  the  results  of  the  study  can  bear  some  implications  for  English  cover  letter’s teaching  and  learning.  By  further  understanding  the  general  rhetorical  structure  of English  cover  letters,  students  can  be  benefitted  in  their  composition  of  high-quality English cover letters.

Chapter Two Literature Review  

Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) is a theory of text organization created in the 1980s as a result of exhaustive analyses of texts, described in Mann and Thompson, (1988).  Since  its  origins  in  the  1980s  RST  has  enjoyed  continuous  attention.  In  this chapter  the  previous  studies  of  Rhetorical  Structure  Theory  and  its  application  at home and abroad will be presented. The previous studies of the cover letters will also be included in this chapter.  

2.1 Previous Studies of RST and Its Application 
Rhetorical  Structure  Theory  is  a  descriptive  theory  of  a  major  aspect  of  the organization of natural text. It is a linguistically useful method for describing natural texts,  characterizing  their  structure  primarily  in  terms  of  relations  that  hold  between parts of the text (Mann and Thompson, 1987:1). RST  can  be  adopted  to  analyze  various  types  of  discourses  at  different  length. Since  its  very  beginning,  it  has  enjoyed  continuous  attention  in  linguistic  researches at home and abroad.
