Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background 
Nowadays,  in  job-hunting,  mostly  the  job-hunter  will  firstly  send  a  cover  letter to  a  potential  employer  to  make  an  introduction  and  show  one’s  qualification, capability,  academic  and  working  experience  and  so  on.  So  cover  letter  works  as  a bridge  between  the  job-hunter  and  employer.  However,  the  employer  may  receive uncountable cover letters from numerous applicants every day, so in order to earn the opportunity  to  have  a  job  interview,  a  decently  expressed  cover  letter  which  can demonstrate  the  job-hunter’  s  abilities  in  a  well-organized  way  to  make  a  deep impression on the employer is essential and significant.     However, it is worth noting that in today’s job-hunting market, a single Chinese cover  letter  is  not  enough  since  with  the  rapid  development  of  our  economy  and globalization,  an  increasing  number  of  international  enterprises  have  landed  on  the Chinese  market.  Therefore  when  we  intend  to  hunt  a  job  in  joint  ventures  or international  companies,  an  English  cover  letter  rather  than  a  Chinese  cover  letter  is more impressive and indispensible. However, Chinese cover letter are different from English  cover  letters,  the  ignorance  of  any  feature  of  the  English  cover  letters  may result  in  unnecessary  misunderstandings  between  the  job-hunter  and  the  potential employer. A well-written English cover letter which can express the applicant well is by  no  means  a  simple  translation  version  of  a  Chinese  one,  close  attention  to  the rhetorical structure of the expression is of great importance.  Rhetorical  Structure  Theory  (RST,  for  short)  by  Mann  and  Thompson  since 1980s is a descriptive framework of natural text organization. As a descriptive theory, RST has been applied to analyze a wide range of written text types. RST believes that the clauses in a text are not randomly and disorderly linked up ether, there are certain semantic  relations  between  them,  which  are  termed  as  rhetorical  relations  in  RST.
