The rules for sense classification of English modal verb can presented in Table 4.17,it can be seen from the table that a23 is the simple class exclusive features of can_ABI,which indicates that the sense of can_ABI is sensitive to the feature.Once there occurs thefeature“harmonic combination”,the English modal verb can expresses the meaning of“ability”.Features a31,a32 are the simple class exclusive features of can_PER,whichmeans that the sense of can_PER is sensitive to the the two features.Once there occurs thefeature“speaker’s authority over the subject”and“law/regulation related topics”,theEnglish modal verb can expresses the meaning of“permission”.The feature a24 is thesimple class exclusive features of can_POS,which indicates that the sense of can_POS issensitive to the feature.Once there occurs the feature“co-ocurrence with without/with/by”,the English modal verb can expresses the meaning of“possibility”.

It can also be seen in Table 4.17 that a12,a19 are the features owned by both therules of can_ABI and can_PER,so the features“MI6<0.08”and“agentive verb”are thecommon features of the two senses can_ABI and can_PER.These features do not occur inthe rules of can_POS,which indicates that the sense of can_POS is insensitive to these features.The features a8,a21,a25,a27 are the features owned by both the rules ofcan_PER and can_POS,so the features“MI4<0.29”,“passive voice”,“relating tocondition”and“direct speech”are the common features of the two senses can_POS andmay_PER.These features do not occur in the rules of can_ABI,which indicates that thesense of can_ABI is insensitive to these features.The features a4,a7,a10,a18,a26,a30are the features owned by both the rules of can_ABI and can_POS,so the features“MI2<0.07”,“MI4≧0.29”,“MI5<0.29”,“inanimate subject”,“relating to consequence”and“declarative sentence”are the common features of the two senses can_ABI andcan_POS.These features do not occur in the rules of can_PER,which indicates that thesense of can_PER is insensitive to these features.

Chapter 6 Conclusions

6.1 Major findings

This thesis conducts a study on feature selection for sense classification of theprimary English modal verbs,taking can and may as examples.The main findings areshown as below.
