I have improved the ability of time management, problem solving and working independently as personal skills, the ability of working with other people, sharing information and participating with groups on interpersonal skill and the ability of writing skill, expressing my idea clearly and presentation as communication skills. In this essay I will show the relationship of these skills which I have improved with Vygotsky’s Social Development Theory, Multiple Intelligences theory, Communities of Practice theory and observational learning theory.
 
Firstly, I have improved my personal skills since I came into Shanghai British College (SBC). The ability of working independently has improved the most. For example, last year, my teacher recommended that we do independent learning activities. I decided to do a reading activity. I chose this for two reasons. Firstly, reading newspaper could help me have a better understanding of current events and secondly, reading is very important to study in the U.K, so I read Shanghai Daily every Friday. However, there were many problems when I did this activity. The first problem was I could not use time efficiently because there were too many new words and I memorized them on Friday but after a week I forgot them, so I had to find the meaning in the dictionary again. The second problem was I could not finish it in time, usually every time I only could read a third of the Shanghai Daily. Thirdly, I did not know how to analyze my problems. In my opinion working independently is very difficult because in high school I used to being told what to study and how and when, I was treated as a child; however, now I did it by myself and was trying to be an independent learner. To improve this problem, firstly, I looked through the content quickly and underlined the new words, next I wrote down these new words in a book. Then I found the meaning and phonetics in the dictionary. Finally I memorized these new words every evening.

Vygotsky’s Social Cognition theory of learning emphasizes that people learn in cultures. I played an active role in learning when I did independent learning. Every country has its own cultures, and therefore different culture will make people learn differently. The culture of SBC teaching is as the British style of teaching education. It is different from high school. The roles of the teacher and I have changed, teachers collaborate with me in order to help facilitate meaning construction in me. Learning therefore becomes a reciprocal experience for me and teacher.

Secondly, I have improved my interpersonal skills since I came into SBC, especially the ability of working with other people, participating with group and sharing information. For example, in the first semester of International Foundation Year (IFY), the business teacher told us to do a market research in a group and there were 5 people in our group. The biggest problem for our team members and I was working with other people. University of Reading (2007) states “working with other people included being able to support and encourage others, being able to give and receive constructive criticism as well as being able to negotiate.
