nts in Claude Lorrain’s works. For example, “Capriccio with ruins of the Roman Forum” (Fig. 3) contains several ancient Roman ruins. On the far left is the ruins of Palatine Hill, next is the three pillars of Castor and Pollux Temple, and the fountain containing drinking water, and in the middle of it is a Colosseum. “The Campo Vaccino, Rome” (Fig. 4) depicts a large number of buildings in ancient Rome, which were partially demolished before Lorrain’s time. Based on the remaining parts, Lorrain restored them and finally showed the scene of the square in the painting.

Chapter Four Pathos in The House of the Seven Gables

4.1 John Ruskin – the Noble Picturesque

英语文学论文参考

The lower picturesque will transform into its higher form -- the noble picturesque (Cook Vol.4 14), when it no longer remains merely in texture and the pure pursuit of beauty, but allows potential seeds of sympathy to take root. In other words, Ruskin found a way to sublimate the picturesque to a new height: that is to depict the picturesque sceneries not only in their appeal, but “cure the picturesque with sympathy” (Macarthur, The Heartlessness 128). Even if the lower picturesque possesses some positive aspects, it still misses or lacks a real ideal and noble power, that is, the personal observation and deep sympathy for the essence of things. In his opinion, this kind of truly profound sympathy is mainly reflected in landscape art paintings, especially in the landscape art of Turner having its most outstanding existence, so the noble picturesque is also called “Turnerian picturesque” (Cook Vol.4 26).

Like Ruskin, Hawthorne’s picturesque concept did not merely dwell upon appearances. He also penetrated it deeply and even connected it with a tragic view of human experience. In The House of the Seven Gables, he defined “picturesqueness” as a thing that “can attract imagination and sympathy to seek it there” (24). In the third chapter, the thesis has made a detailed description on the stimulation of imagination by picturesque sceneries, and this chapter will elaborate on the motivation of sympathy and pathos by some other pieces of picturesque landscape paintings.

Conclusion

Inheriting some essential components of the picturesque theory from his predecessors Claude Lorrain, William Gilpin, etc., John Ruskin, based on their views, made a sublimation and further put forward two aspects of the picturesque: the lower picturesque and the noble picturesque. The former is the visual beauty presented by the picturesque sceneries, while the latter is a force that makes people sym论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
