According to Verschueren, context consists of the communicative context andthe linguistic context. The linguistic context mainly includes cohesion, intertextualityand sequencing. And the communicative context consists of the physical world, themental world and the social world. Contextual adaptation refers to the necessity oflanguage selection and contextual adaptation in the process of language use. Whenlanguage users choose and understand language, they should pay attention to thecommunicative context and the linguistic context (Ge, 2001: 27). In this chapter, thetranslator mainly focuses on the communicative context, making appropriateadaptation to make the translation more native and to improve readability of thetranslation.

4.1.1Adaptation to the physical world

The physical world consists of four aspects: temporal reference, speaker andinterpreter, spatial reference and material condition of speech. Time referenceincludes the time of event and the time of reference, while the spatial reference coversthe position of communicators in the physical world and the body language related tospeech acts (He&Yu, 1999). Different interpretation of time and space affects thetranslator’s understanding and expression of the logic and meaning of the original text,as well as the adaptation of language.

5.1 Major findings

First and foremost, this translation report first introduces the translation projectand translation process, and then introduces the adaptation theory of Verschueren andits guiding role in translation, especially in academic texts.

Adaptation theory holds that the process of language use is a process in whichlanguage users continuously choose and adapt to language. In the process oftranslation practice, the translator finds that the process of translation is also a processof language selection. Therefore, it is feasible and interpretive to use adaptationtheory to guide translation practice.

What’s more, in the framework of adaptation theory, the author makes a detailedanalysis from two aspects: correlates of adaptation and structural objects of adaptationby illustrating a large number of examples. At the level of contextual correlates ofadaptation, it mainly focuses on the adaptation of communicative context, includingthe physical world, the mental world and the social world. All these adaptations madeduring translation process are aimed to make the target text more readable andacceptable. Structural objects of adaptation concentrates on lexical, syntactic andtextual aspects. In the process of translating academic texts, translators shouldproperly supplement the meaning of words, convert the word-class and adoptfour-character structure. In terms of syntax, for the translation of long sentences, thetranslator should first analyze the meaning and logical structure of the source text, andthen reconstruct the sentences if necessary. The translation of passive voice can bechanged from passive to active, or remain passive.
