CHAPTER ONECHICANO POLITICAL MOVEMENT AND CHICANOLITERATURE
1.1 Historical Context of Chicano Political Movement
Chicano movement is first at all a political movement organized by the MexicanUS American1community against labor exploitation, cultural and racial discrimination.This disadvantaged position of oppression suffered by the Mexican US American2community is linked to the history and the geopolitics of both countries. Perhapsnowhere else in the world, there is a case like that of Mexico and the United States, twocountries that share a border of more than 3,100 kilometers and yet are separated byabysmal historical, political, economic, and cultural differences.
Over the last 150 years, Mexicans have had to pay a high price for the fact thatthey are one of the only two countries in the world that share land boundaries with theUS. In the nineteenth century, Mexicans gave up more than half of their territory totheir expansionist northern neighbor. Mexico’s strategic location, oil wealth, andnatural resources have always contributed to an increase in the interests of the US inMexico.
The Chicano movement is the result not only of labor exploitation suffered byMexican US Americans in the US but also of historical events that date from theEuropean invasion or colony in America (XVI Century) to the more contemporaryexpansionist history of the US XIX Century).

1.2 Gloria Anzaldua and her Borderlands: General Characteristics and Background
Gloria Anzaldua was born in September 1942 in the Valley of Texas; she was ahard-working girl until her poor and migrant parents who worked the fields (as she alsodid) decided to send her school to study. She went to a small school in Hargill, Texas.As she loved school and found her passion in books continued studying and got herB.A from Pan American University, three years later, she got her M.A. in English andEducation in 1972. During those years of academic formation, she never stoppedworking in the fields and always kept in touch with the cruel reality of the Mexicanmigrants in South Texas. However, since earning her master’s degree in 1974, she wasmainly a lecturer in creative writing, feminist studies, and Chicano studies at theUniversity of Texas at Austin and its Mexican American Studies Center, the Universityof California at Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, Oakes College at UC SantaCruz, Vermont College, and Norwich University in Indiana. She also taught literature,creative writing, and women’s studies courses. Although she continued to participatein workshops, conferences, and panels (Ikas 19). She also intended to study a doctorate;however, as she suffered from academic discrimination, she quit the doctorate programand moved to San Francisco. Anzaldua says; “They did not consider ethnic cultures’studies as having the impact or weight needed to enter the academy. And so in a lot ofthese classes, I felt silenced, like I had no voice” (Ikas 32)
