5.1 Implications for Parents
According to the analysis and main findings of this study, family’s education is animportant factor in high school students’ English study. At the same time, it is also acrucial element reflecting the education in the family. So improving parents’education background can lead to students’ good English achievement and familyeducation. In general, students are in much closer relationship with parents at homethan with teachers at school. When studying English at home, it is convenient forthem to ask their parents for help and communicate with them. Parents, who are bettereducated especially in English, tend to master abundant English knowledge and somevaluable study strategies. The children in these families may acquire Englishknowledge and ability with their parents’ well direction and their problem in Englishstudy may be solved immediately.In the interview, it can be found that there are a lot of parents of high education inEnglish cannot guide their children’s English study. Parents are too busy with theirwork that they do not have spare time to help students with their English study. But ingeneral it is better for parents to improve their education background especially inEnglish if they can. In addition, it must be pointed out that parents’ education cannotdetermine their children’s English achievement directly. There is no one-to-onecorrespondence between them. As is verified in the statistical analysis and theinterviews, some exceptions are explained in details, such as some students receivegood English achievement despite of their parents’ relatively low educationbackground.

Conclusion
Foreign language learning is a complex process, which is influenced by variousinternal and external factors. Among these factors, family background is an essentialexternal factor but is often neglected in the Chinese students’ learning English. Thisstudy explores the correlation between family background of high school students andtheir English achievement. The study first reviews some related studies and theorieson foreign language learning. And then collected statistics and interviews are analyzedand discussed with the help of computer software---SPSS 17.0.There are two variables of family background investigated in the study. The firstone aspect is family’s education background. The second aspect is parents’professional background. The statistics verifies that there is correlation between thesetwo social variables and high school students’ English achievement. There is lowcorrelation between high school students’ English achievement and their parents’education. There is medium correlation between high school students’ Englishachievement and their parents’ professional background. Although family backgroundhas influence on students’ English learning, it cannot determine students’ Englishachievement.
