Chapter 2 Theoretical Basis
2.1 Sociolinguistics
Sociolinguistics appears in the 1950s and is becoming an important branch oflinguistics nowadays. The term “sociolinguistics” was first proposed by Americanlinguists Haver C. Currie (1952) in his article The Relationship of Speech to SocialStatus. He wrote that the social functions and meanings of speech factors provide amore wide research field---sociolinguistics. It drew many researchers’ attention andgrew into an active discipline in a short time. In 1964, the first sociolinguistic meetingwas held in America, which marked the rising of a new independentdiscipline---sociolinguistics. William Bright (1966) collected the content of themeeting and published sociolinguistic papers---Sociolinguistics: Proceedings of theUCLA Sociolinguistics Conference, which is the earliest work of sociolinguistics. There are mainly seven subjects summarized in these papers about sociolinguistics: 1)social status of speakers. 2) social status of listeners in the communicative process. 3)social environment of the speech event. 4) synchronic and diachronic analysis ofsocial dialect. 5) social evaluation of speakers towards different speech event. 6) theextent of language variation. 7) actual application of sociolinguistics. From then on, alot of researchers have paid their attention on this new-born field. American linguistsNessa Wolfson (1983) defines sociolinguistics as “Who says what to whom, when andhow”. He explains “what” as the language’s content, “how” as the way or method tospeak, “who, whom and when” as social variables. The whole sentence means thatwhen and in what kind of situation, speakers and listeners speaks to what kind ofperson.

2.2 Social Factors Concerned with Language learning
Social factors concerned with language learning are an important aspect ofsociolinguistics because more and more linguists hope to find some experimentalevidences for linguistics instead of seeking some kind of language learning device oruniversal grammar through an assumed theory. Therefore, they are against to studylanguage without looking at its social environment. They believe that social factorsmust be the content of linguistics, including class, family background, social status, educational level, age, gender, occupation and so on. There are a lot of social factorsthat affect language usage and learning.
