bsp;In addition, different researchers use different terms to refer to the lexical chunk, for instance, speech formulas (Peters, 1977), lexicalized sentence stems (Pawley&Syder, 1983), prefabricated chunks (Widdowson, 1989), formulaic speech (Ellis, 1999). There are so many terminologies, justlike Weinert (1995:182) claims: “while labels vary, it seems that researchers have very much the same phenomenon in mind”. According to certain perspectives of language, different terminologies have been proposed by different researchers to refer to the lexical chunks. The author in this
thesis chooses to use the term “lexical chunk”. The following are some representative definitions of lexical chunks. Becker (1974:16) is one of the early init iators who put forward the concept of lexical chunks, he points out that as a special multi-word phenomenon, lexical chunk are existed in the form of fixed or semi-fixed chunks and their functions are just like that of the traditional grammar and lexis. Becker says that the lexical chunks are existing frameworks, and w e just use them to express our thoughts and ideas, so it is not necessary for us to put our efforts in searching for discourse when we want to express something.

Since then, as one of the main constitutes of lexical chunk, collocation has become a widely-used term and being widely discussed. In his influent ial paper on the magical number seven, Miller (1956: 81-97) advanced the term “chunking”. As a psychologist in America, Miller points out that even though our immediate memory capacity seems to be lim ited to seven units of information, chunking (or coding single units into large units) greatly expand our capacity. Hakuta (1974) conducts a study of a five years old Japanese child who learns English and find out that learning of lexical chunks is companied with learning of language. Meanwhile, he claims that learning of lexical chunks help learners to generate right sentences. Bolinger (1976) point
