Chapter Four Research of the Corpus on High SchoolEnglish Textbooks


For English learning, especially the primary and secondary English learning,teaching material is of great importance. And vocabulary is an important part of foreignlanguage learning and teaching material writing. However, it is not an easy job to chooseproper vocabulary to compile teaching material which is mainly made up of subject,theme, structure, and task due to the fact that teaching material needs numerous variedvocabulary. Therefore, it is very necessary to evaluate the vocabulary of the teachingmaterial. However,the traditional evaluation of textbook vocabulary is mainly subjectiveand experienced due to lack of sufficient research and reliable reference standard. Eitherthe qualitative analysis based on overall expression or limited research based onindividual case is short of quantitative research. Since the 1980s, the widespreadapplication of large corpus and retrieval statistics function of corpus have been improvedincreasingly, which provides new method and resource for improving the outline designand textbook compilation and evaluation.

Conclusion


This thesis begins with a discussion about the teaching methodology of the culturalelements in the vocabulary of Basic English Teaching Textbooks. Students' failure toreflect the hidden culture in textbooks reveals the need for systematical research of thecultural education in English teaching. The results of this trial research turn out to beunsatisfactory for limits of texts which in turn brought up the urgency of the combinationof corpus with teaching.Before doing the corpus-based study on high school English textbooks, the pros andcons of the established corpus is exposed, this leads to further considerations of thefeasibility of the targeted personal corpus. Later the core issue of the difference betweengeneral corpuses and individuated ones gradually come into our sight. The constructingof a small corpus has many limitations. If we compare small corpuses with generalcorpuses, the latter may seem to be more multifunctional, but its drawbacks as discussedby Sinclair in 1991,are clear: difficult to access and lack of specific examples. Anotherflaw which drives people to make individuated corpus is the timeliness of Ae establishedcorpus. For corpuses like Brown or LOB,they are not as effective as they were.
