摘要:Over the recent years, many researchers have paid close attention to the discoursemarkers. Early researchers laid stress on some spoken DMs. They were fond to study thekind of words or phrases in oral English: you know, I mean, well, etc. By virtue of variousapproaches to discourse markers, many researchers both abroad and at home studieddiscourse markers in writings.
Conclusion
To a certain extent, the quantitative research in this thesis can be representative, but itwill be more credible if the materials are collected more widely and a larger corpus is builtup. As to the subjects, only 193 students from an ordinary senior high school were involvedin. Their language proficiency and studying environment cannot stand for that of all EFLlearners. Therefore, the findings from this research may not be regarded as a generalconclusion.In terms of data collection, the materials collected are limited to narrativecompositions. It is possible that taking different topics or types of tasks could make adifference from the findings in this research. In addition, there are no questionnaires orinterviews adopted to explore the possible reasons for the problems.
When it comes to the mistakes, there may be some because of the relatively short time. When the data were dealt with, some manual works are inevitable, which may result insome subjective mistakes, even though the data have been cautiously checked. Moreover,the subjective knowledge might have an effect on the qualitative analysis of the causes ofthe students’ inappropriate use of DMs.
If it is possible, future researches can be conducted on the basis of the lager corpusincluding more students’ narrative writings from more high schools of different levels andfrom different areas. Future researches may be carried out to disclose the relationshipbetween the grades of the writings and the proper number of DMs in the writings. It wouldbe another interest to verify the hypothesis that more capable English learners use fewerDMs in narrative writings than less capable learners do.Moreover, investigating the differences of frequently used DMs by the high schoolstudents in oral narrative and narrative writings would be worthwhile. Though it is not athorough research, the thesis sheds some light on the current situation of DMs used inChinese senior high school students’ narrative writings.
