The author also makes a survey and an interview on the current situation ofEnglish culture teaching in the senior high school. The results of the survey and interviewgive teachers a whole picture about the current situation of English culture teaching in seniorhigh schools. Then according to the results of the survey and the interview the author putsforward some feasible suggestions for English culture teaching in senior high schools, whichare helpful for teachers to improve English culture teaching. The study can also provide someuseful data and enlightenment for further research in this field.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Culture
What is culture? The answer can be various. Many definitions have been suggested for it.Culture is multidimensional, complex, and all-pervasive. Many scholars give their definitionsto it from different perspectives. Hinkle (1999) states that it may not be an exaggeration to saythat there are nearly as many definitions of culture as there are fields of inquiry into humansocieties, groups, systems, behaviors and activities. As early as 1952, Krober and Kluckhohnlisted 164 definitions of culture that they found in the anthropology literature (Samovar,Porter & Stefani, 2000: 36).The term culture comes from the Latin word cultura. It refers to the growing of plans andthe breeding of animals. Later, it is enlarged in meaning and it means to develop people’squality, skills and so on. It is the English anthropologist Edward Burnett Taylor who first putsforward the concept of culture. He indicates that “culture is that complex whole whichincludes knowledge, belief, art,moral,law, custom, and any other capabilities, habits acquiredby man as a member of society” in his book Primitive Culture published in 1871 (Liu Jing,2006:23). Later, many definitions about culture are put forward. The following are somepopular ones.
Culture may be defined as what a society does and thinks (Sapir, 1921).Culture is man’s medium; there is no aspect in human life that is not touched and alteredby culture. This means personality, how people express themselves including shows ofemotion, the way they think, how they move, how problems are solved, how their cities are planned and laid out, how transportation systems function and are organized, as well as howeconomic and government systems are put together and function (Edward T. Hall, 1977).Culture is the evolving way of life of a group of persons, consisting of a shared set ofpractices associated with a shared set of products, based upon a shared set of perspectives onthe world, and set within specific social contexts (Patrick R. Moran, 2009:24).From the above definitions we can see that scholars talk about culture either in its broadsense or in its narrow sense. In foreign language teaching we incline to talk about culture inits narrow sense. According to The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2003:21), in English as foreign language teaching, culture mainly refers to the history,geography, customs and habits, traditions and conventions, way of life, literature, art, normsof conduct, values, etc. In this thesis, the author adapts this definition to talk about culture.
