But during revenge by virtue of the differences in their nature, their foes they face, reasons for it, and the outside circumstances, etc, they behave differently and develop their own way.
As stated above, Heathcliff is Satan himself so he is brute by nature and even symbol of evil. Especially after Catherine’s death, his brutality is deepened and strengthened for this moment he is fully engulfed by his worldview of hatred. He is utter an injured wild beast with a stone heart. And even symbol of the Feud. While Edmond is born an angel of ordinary man so he is destinied to be a kind man except that he have revenge on his foes who bring about his miserable life, which gets him to be filled with detest. But even under the conditions, we can find that there is still love in his inner heart .The point embodies in his rewards to the Morrels, care for Maximilan before and after Valentine’s unreal death, and his abandonment of duel with Albert at the pri ce of his possible death owing to Mercedes’ begging. Thus, by reason of their respective nature, during revenge Heathcliff is more ruthless than Edmond. As far as this is concerned, we can say from the following two facts. One is when he meets his own only son for the first time, he claims him his property and roughly drags him between his knees wholly ignoring his weakness and horror, the other is when little Catherine tells him his son little Linton is seriously ill at the door of death, his says:“‘We know that’ answered Heathcliff:‘but his life is not worth a farthing, and I won’t spend a farthing on him’”.(10) This is words out of a father’s tongue. This is his response given to his son’s bad conditions. It is really beyond our comprehension. An old Chinese idiom goes like this “Even tigress does not eat her cubs”. But how about our Mr Heathcliff? He considers that money is more important than his son’s life. How absurd and ridiculous his words and actions are! As for Hindley, when he faints on the ground at excessive pain and bleeding caused by his failure in killing Heathcliff, Heathcliff beats him heavily even at this moment. He is really called the cruelest tyrant in the world .Yet Edmond is by far less than he in this aspect although he avenges himself violently and savagely on his enemies. This shows, at the sigh of the terrible scene that Mr. Villefort is mad at the heavy blow of his wife and son’s death, in his words:“‘Oh, enough of this ! enough of this’, He cried …’”.(11) The voice comes out of the tongue of a kind man who finds his conscience. In additon, it tells us that Edmond returns to the world of love. So afterwards his releases Danglars after confining him in his cave for a few day. According to the facts, we can say that Heathcliff takes revenge more ferociously than Edmond due to his stronger hatred. This is because during revenge Edmond is circled by love all the way while Heathcliff completely encloses himself in strong dislike.
Considering the different foes they confront, during revenge they two form their respective means. One’s is flexible and tactful yet the other’s is naked and direct for Edmond’s enemies are more and powerful while Heathchliff’s are less and fragile.
We know Edmond’s enemies are Fernand, Villefort, and Danglars, who all hold important positions in French, respectively count, magistrate and banker. If they three unite, it is difficult for Edmond to deal with them. While Heathclif
