and Nelly and imprisons them in Wuthering Heights for one week on purpose, aferwards he only frees Nelly. How spiteful and ruthless he is because he prevents father and daughter seeing each other when father is dying. This action corresponds with his words when Catherine is dying “ I love my murderer—but yours! How can I”?(9) Actually he just finds an excuse for his brutality and cruelty. An excuse for all above actions seems to his promise to his lover. It seems that he does these rightly and properly. Under the name of punishment he takes his revenge ferociously on Hindley and Linton and even their descendants, which reaches the extent that makes people’s hair stand on end until his foes die and he is tired of revenge, which makes him and his enemies live in pain and agony. Thanks to his tiring, he finally gives up revenge and chooses death so as to meet Catharine in heaven sooner.
As to Edmond, after he finds the treasure, he uses it to collect all the proofs against his foes and get familiar with them. Some of them even consider him as their friend and have total confidence in him. Then he visits them at the proper time after their visits. During his visits he pays attention to details of their talks with him and then takes appropriate measures. For instance, from the talk with Albert and Lucien Debary, he knows Albert’s dissatisfaction with Miss Dnglars and the special relationship between the Danglars and Debary; from the talk with Danglars, he knows all the unhonourable histories of Comte de Morcerf and the way how to disclose it; from the talk with Madame Villefort, he knows her interest in medicine which will become poison when overdosed after his depiction about it, etc. With the help of these pieces of information, he makes elaborate plan to have everything in his hand. And meanwhile he takes advantage of his enemies’ weakness—greed and curiosity. And in order to cause his plan to go well, he always does something to make sure of it and then adjust it. This embodies in his revenge on Danglars. When he assures himself of the strong dislike between Albert and Miss Danglars, he makes two cheats Bartolomeo Cavaleati and Andrea Cavaleanti to seduce Danglers into falling into his trap. That is to marry his daughter to Andrea Cavaleanti for his wealth instead of Albert. By virtue of this change of his decision Danglars not only makes him further bankrupt but also makes him and his family unhonorable. Moreover, in accordance with the acquired information, that is the special relationship between the Danglars and Debary he sends two pieces of false information which makes Danglars on the verge of bankruptcy; to Morcerf’s disgraceful
history, he sends an anonymous letter to the press, which makes him notorious; to Madame Villefort’s interest in the special medicine, he makes her assistant of his revenge on Villefort. Due to his these well-conceived plans, Danglars end up as a beggar; Villefort becomes mad at the heavy blow of his wife and son’s death; Morcerf commits suicide .They all get what they are worth.
Besides, during revenge they two are cruel and ferocious for they indirectly bring about deaths of their foes and simutaneously they hurt the innocent people also. They are quick-witted and flexible in carrying out their plans, too. But to some sense; they two base their revenge on their great fortune, and good conduct, and their politeness.
