yet Edmond still posses love and kindness for he is full of gratitude towards mr. Morel’s kindness and moved by Maximilan and his sister’s words and actions during his revenge. Nevertheless, it is not doubted that the two men fall into the abyss of strong dislike despite Edmond still owns love in his heart. Why so? It is due to their miserable experiences commonly suffered and bad treatments cause by others’ crafty plan that one loses his lover who is his whole world, the other loses his dearest relatives—his father and
Financee Mercedes and even his freedom as stated above. On account of this, they two choose the same way to release their strong hatred—revenge on their persecutors ferociosly after they make fortune and them gentlemen. Then they come back with their great fortune and detest. By means of their fortune and politeness acquired, they begin their revenge silently and furtively. First, they confuse their foes and gain their confidence. Then they keep in touch with them properly and catch details during talks with them in an indifferent way. In fact in their own heart they make appropriate plans which makes everything go well according to their will by virtue of information they have gotten. Through it they avenge themselves ferociously on their rivals and persecutors until they die or suffer from what they deserve. But eventually they two go back to the world of love.
For example, after he makes great fortune and returns with it, Heathcliff uses his money to makes Hindley more addicted to drinking and gambling. And meanwhile he takes revenge more violently and savagely on Hindley’s son by making him illiterate and scoundrel just as Bindley does him previously. He is satisfied with this very much, we can see this when he asks Hareton to show little Catherine around Wuthering Heights, he says to Nelly: “If he were a born fool, I should not enjoy it half so much. But he’s no fool, … and he’ll never be able to emerge from his bathes of coarseness and ignorance. For he takes a pride in his brutishness”.(7) This is consistent with his words said to Hareton at Handley’s funeral “And we’ll see if one tree won’t grow ascrooked as another, with the same wind to twist”.(8) He does as he says. He makes him ignorant and look down upon book by threatening the curate and Hindley, which let Hareton admire him very much and even consider him as father, which is failure and sadness of Hindley as a father. This is a heavy blow to him, too. At last Heathcliff gets all the properties of Hindley easily and succeeds in changing Hareton. To Linton, his politeness and good conduct makes him view him in a new, more favorable light. Afterwards, owing to Catherine’s efforts, he is reluctantly allowed to vi sit Thrushcross Grange. By virtue of this right he learns that Isabella, Linton’s only sister, loves him very much and she can inherit her brother’s properties if Catherine does not give birth to a boy. He makes good use of this information by his success in seducing Isabella into running off with him without Linton’s permission. After Isabella’s escape and the birth of his son, he plays another trick that is to make his son and little Catherine fall in love and then marry, by way of which he continues his former plan. After the coming failure of his plan, he makes use of little Catherine’s sympathies and naivety and lets his plan go continuously. Next he does the most terrible thing. That is when Linton is dying; he kidnaps little Catherine
