indebted to him. She fought against him, but the overwhelming burden of the large family too much for her to bear alone.
"Throughout the novel the reader was impressed by the nobility of her character, by her pride, loyalty, and honesty. She realized her importance as an individual and wishes to walk uprightly through her life." If Tess could live like her mother's simple satisfaction and her father's narrow, vanity, she would possess another life. The death would never happen. After seduction, she could become Alec's lover or use some tricks to be Alec's legal wife. But Tess was the rebelled woman of social culture. She resisted society depending on nature. In her personality there were apparently contradictory qualities which leaded Tess to unavoidable death.
2.3 The inevitability of Tess's tragedy caused by Alec and Angel
Alec was the person who destroyed the life of Tess completely in Tess’ mind. Alec seduced Tess. It was unforgivable in any case. It was the sin of Alec that brought Tess so much torment in the later life. The image of Alec in the novel represented the evil. He was the enemy of Tess. In Tess’s mind Alec’s duty in the world was to hurt her. He deserved death in the end in Tess’s mind. So, at last, Tess killed Alec when she found that Alec was the barrier of her reconcile with Angel. The cruel and hypocritical Alec pushed Tess to unavoidable death.
Angel who Tess loved most and who she was willing to devoted her life to should also take some response to the tragedy to some extend. If he really loved Tess he should not treated Tess so cold—blooded. Anyway he should not left Tess alone. It was unfair to treated Tess who loved him so much in that way. It was he who gave Alec to take advantage. Especially after many years Angel returned to Tess who then lived with Alec, which tortured Tess very much. Because she longed for living happy life with Angle and Alec was the barrier. So she sacrificed for her love. Had not Alec come back, Tess shouldn’t have killed Alac.
3. The inevitability of Tess's tragedy produced by internal causes
The tragedy of Tess's life in the battle between the inherent will to enjoy and the circumstantial will against enjoyment. In her personality there are apparently contradictory qualities of pride independence of spirit with a passivity and submissiveness towards her fate and her instinctive equal thoughts with the natural world of feelings and emotions, which is overlaid by a conventional morality, leaded Tess to the death and resistance step by step.
3.1 The inevitability of Tess's tragedy produced by the contradiction between her submission and her pride independence
Tess is capable of pride and independence, in her determination in leaving Alec, her unwillingness to tell her parents the truth about her marriage or to approach Angel's parents. And also Hardy linked this pride very specifically to the apparently opposite side of her character "Pride, too, entered into her submission--which perhaps was symbol of that reckless acquiescence in chance, too apparent in the whole d'Urberville family."
Antipathy was Tess's distinct feeling to Alec. She always had beautiful dream for love. She couldn't live like her parents. The contradictory between her submission and pride independence decided that she would resist. But that kind of resistance was unconscious, blindness in action and unstable. Her recognition hadn't reached the rational level, so Tess
