goistical bourgeois style. Tess's life consistently adhere to natural law. This kind of obedience originated from life's instinct, not established on some reasonable recognition. "She longed for the freedom, love and happiness, only because she felt these could bring her h appy. Life was emerged muddily but sometimes extremely distinct before Tess." But Victorian society made use of her purity and muddy, pushing her to the tragic stage. Individual life and the world about it were linked in their brevity but they are also identical in the "inherent will to enjoy". After the death of her child, Tess's spirit within her rose automatically as the sap in the twigs. "It was ...the invincible instinct towards self-delight." It is the inevitable struggle between morality and the will to live which is the fundamental theme of the novel. So good a girl was pushed to the death by the society. The author pointed directly: "Beyond control the law destroyed by Tess, which accepted by human, not natural law." but the social crime made Tess to endure all the suffering. This was the conflict between social culture and human nature, it made known reasonless of Victorian society. Tess's tragedy wasn't the tease by destiny, was caused by that era which ignored the existence of human nature and throttled humanity ruthless. 2.2 The inevitability of tragedy caused by Tess's unique personality which different from her parents Tess it often compared to a "bird caught in a trap," and by the repeated use of this metaphor the author pictures his heroine as almost without blame for her sin against society. After her seduction she asked her mother: "Why didn't you tell me there was danger in men-folk?" Tess's father and mother were of a social class "ranking distinctly above" the agricultural labourer.[ii] But it was clear that Jack Durberfield made little effort to maintain his family in comfort. Though" he had good strength to work at times," "the times could not be relied on to coincide with the hours of requirement His wife, Joan, was little better, letting domestic chores" "linger on to the end of the week." With the pressures of bringing up a large family in difficult circumstances, it was no wonder that both of them prefer slipping out for a drink, when they could forget their cares, to doing anything very positive. Her mother, with visions of a fancy marriage for her pretty daughter, gave little thought to the type of man her daughter would be associated with. Her father also thought only of his own desire to restore the family name to its former stature. This was the circumstance under which Tess was brought up. Various aspects of Tess's character inherited from her parents. But she had her own personality. Although her family was poor, she hadn't the vanity to keep close relationship with the wealthy man and the vision like her mother to rise in the world by making a successful marriage. Tess's weakness lied in her feeling of responsibility for her family's welfare. She loved her younger brothers and sisters and felt she must provide for them. But this noble aim leads to most of her difficulties. Alec sensed her concern for them and used his generous gifts to them as a means of dominating Tess. She was grateful for what he did for the children, but didn't want to be 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
