A. The Influence on the “Lost Generation”
1. The suffering of the War
The principle of building a country with equality, freedom and democracy has been crushed by the war and the free market economy. When the veterans joined in the army they believed that the war is a means could solve all the problems and a war end for all. But when they returned from the battle field what they found was that: “people are still talking about the commitment they had made, and they are being considered as the problem children, the non-veterans got more advantages to the job opportunities. The free market economy emphasize too much on the profit, what people are talking about is how much money their neighbors made, the moral principle of equality and freedom had been crushed by the free- market economy. When they soldiers returned to their hometown they found that the people have abandoned the values they fight in the battlefield and this proved that what they fought for is meaningless. Marx wrote that: “the market system drowns the mostly heavenly ecstasies of religious fervor, of chivalrous enthusiasm, of philistine sentimentalism”. All religion provided their members with a sense of identity and security by providing the meaning and purposes. But the coming age made the church no longer a place for consolation, and it became a tedious place. The American dream of building a country with freedom equality and democracy take placed by the dream of compete the biggest slice of the pie of the wealth. As John Taylor writes, the celebration and the lure of wealth have overpowered conventional restraints.” The lost generation felt rootless. None of them could tell where they are come from and where they will go.
The free market economy bewitched the peoples to the money. Money is good, more money is better. And they had only themselves to blame if they did not seize every opportunity to strike it rich. The people are so vulnerable to the seductive temptations that surrounded them, so helpless in the face of material pleasures just beyond her reach. For those exposed to the same inflated dream of wealth glamour, and power, b
