Scott Fitzgerald likewise questioned the crass materialism of the opulent rich. H.L Mencken mocked the values of small town in America, themes echoed in the writings of Sinclair Lewis. Eugene O’Neill’s plays depicted the darker side of family life and explored racism. T. S. Eliot’s the waste land use the metaphor impotence to comment on the postwar world. A group of southern writers known as Fugitives attacked industrialism and regarded traditional southern society as an alternative to crass materialism.
As it stated above, the lost generation of the United States mainly refers to the expatriate’s writers, and many of the expatriate war writers were born in the end of the 19th century. In the 1920s, they created a new form of literature works, which criticized the industrialized world, and they tried to take the flags to create a world, which emphasized on reestablishing the moral rules by adopting the way of criticize the new forms of the industrialized world. Most of the members are stepped from the battlefield, in which they witnessed the cruelty of the World War I, they are nostalgic to the old happy times, and most of them lived in a small town of Paris, and lead a Bohemian life. Alienation toward the society fulfilled in the mind. At one side they disdained the new industrial civilization but at the same time they crazily cherished the materialistic enjoyment. Although the government prohibit alcohol drink, but they went to the bar enjoyed every thrill of drinking and also they tried fashionable experimentation of love affairs. This generation is a combination of a rational mind and a crazy action.
B. The Generation of “1980s”.
According to RenLanlan, “the ‘the generation of 1980s’of china refers to the group of people (especially the young writers) who was born in China between 1980 and 1990 after China adopt free-market economic policy, and open her door to the outside world, at the turn of the new century, they published books which expressed their dissatisfaction toward the world.”(Ren Lanlan, 2006 38) Some years ago, Han Han HeiKe ManZhou and rock singer Li Yang were regarded as the spokesman of this generation by Times. Too much has been commented upon the young generation of China. They are being regarded as self-centered, greedy, desperate, materialistic, and loves no one but themselves. This is a bewitched generation, they worship wealth very much, all of them dreamed to become a millionaire at the age of 30; this is a bewildered generation, they don’t know who they are, and who he will be? They loved self-performance very much, and always stand at the front stage of the fashion show. The relationship between them and the traditional world had been cut off by the social transformation and they stick to the traditional virtues no more.
Ⅱ. Social Background of the Two Generations
A. The United States in 1920s
The economy of United States underwent a transformation during the 1880s-1920s, the Second Industrial Revolution took place during this period. The society realized its transformation from the agricultural society to the industrial society.
