Conclusion
The intellectuals of China always look for the truth in the western world, and they hope that China could follow the development steps of the West as we work hard for the prosperity of the Chinese people. But to the astonishment of Chinese scholars, the West also meets the problems. Furthermore, these couldn’t be solved by the social system. For this, there springs up the problem children—the “lost generation”. When the open door policy and the free-market economy are adopted, people get bewitched by the wealth brought by the boom of economy. The generation of 1980s also get perplexed. Through the comparison between the two one can find that two generations made different decisions when they facing the transformation of the social system. The “lost generation” chose to ignite the passion toward the traditional art, arouse people’s noble emotion toward the arts. They tried their best to retrospect oneself and reconsidered the position of human beings in the society. At other side the 1980s of China chose to indulge themselves in the materialistic enjoyment. They deliberately set out to win the favor of the people. They disdained the traditional values and become too self-centered, and materialistic.”
As this problem couldn’t be solved by the capitalism system, the generation of 1980s shouldn’t anticipate that the “lost generation" could give them some useful advice which can be used to get rid of this lost in mind and solve all the problems existing in the society. While from the different decision the “lost generation” made and their courage to face the music. The “generation of the 1980s” should learn to stand up by their own effort, and never forget that: “contrary to the western ideology, the traditional Confucianism stand beside them”. It advises people to concentrate on the self-cultivate and commit people to a harmony society. Especially when the world get over developed, and almost every community has been eroded by the individualism, the Confucianism becomes more important to reorganize the society and to redefine the moralities of the world.
The 1980s must learn how to build a civil harmony society with Confucianism, since a civil society is the antidote to the lost virus. They must learn to build a civil society which involves a culture of love, morality, and the trust that leads people to care for others and for larger communities. Since these traditions nurtures responsibilities by providing incentives for people to act not just in their own interest but for the common good, “the generation of 1980s” should remember that: there was once another side of the dream beside the purely pursue the wealth. More egotism would result lioness and indulgence in the materialism. As they put emphasis on the freedom, on the individualism, they shouldn’t forget the traditional ethnics, abandon the tradition of caring for others, and they should keep a balance between the collectivism and the individualism.
