ot going our way. In the book “Changing destiny Liao Fan’s four lessons” written by Mr. Yuan Liao Fan, a prominent high ranking officer who lived in the 16th century Ming dynasty, Liao Fan mentioned that our destiny is not predestined and can be changed through the cultivation and practice of good virtues. In Buddhism, a person who engages in unethical and harmful acts will ultimately suffer the consequences of their own karma. There is also a popular saying that a person who enjoys good fortunes and karma will live in a house with good feng shui.
2. “Ren Qi”
Very often, most people tend to overlook the physical feng shui of oneself. A person with good physical feng shui has strong Ren Qi. These are confident people who possessed strong interpersonal skills, which enable them to create new opportunities from their networking, in return enable them to obtain support from important people. To take a holistic approach, it is equally important to create a good feng shui for the house and also for oneself.
3. Temples
China has been an agricultural country. The superstitions originated in the village. The grave of farmer’s ancestors are built in there. Many people said that ghosts haunted at night. If some crops are attacked by locusts, the people think that the ghost makes trouble. Owing to the long drought, the crops have failed, but the people think that the God are punishing them. So there are many temples in China, and many people can worship the Buddha at temple every year. Chinese people believe that the ghost and the God are ubiquitous.
4. Other Superstitions
Generally speaking, in modern apartments, there is always a big mirror in the bathroom, and it is inevitable for us not to look in the mirror when we have a wash before going to bed . Some other people hung a mirror at their door or window to drive away ghosts. Another superstition is concerned with dream, if a big fire or a serious flood broke out , you would have a big fortune the next day. On the contrary ,if you got a great deal of money in your dream, you’d better be careful the following days ,as it is said that you will probably lose your fortune in any form.
D. Influence of Superstitions
Superstitions have influence on our society and life. In the past, many people died of superstitions. They believed everything was controlled by ghosts or gods.
Now, superstitious activities are active day by day. Horror stories related to ghosts and gods in books, periodicals , movies, television programs have negative effect on people’s thoughts, especially on elementary and middle school students.
Elementary and middle school students have received the feudal superstitions to various degrees. There was a survey of 702 students on ghosts and gods on Internet in January to Marth, 1994.
Belief Number Proportion
the lucky calamity is destined 81 11.5%
the soul does not die 70 10.0%
the ghost and gods 68 9.7%
the human can be reincarnated after die 67 9.5%
the heaven, the hell 59 8.4%
God, god Buddha 27 3.9%
From the above chart, we can see a few students are superstitious. Some students try to find out their future on network fortune-telling games. Some are willing to pay all kinds of money just for a mobile phone number containing such “lucky” digits as 6, 8 or 9. Some students prefer to do every exam paper with the same pen or pencil with which they got high scores on previous tests. Some graduating students even go to the Buddhis
