本文是一篇初中英语教学论文,本文通过对比分析初中英语观摩课和常态课课堂的教师话语人际意义的实现手段,总结观摩课教师话语的人际功能特点,并通过调查初中学生对教师话语人际意义实现手段的看法,进一步证明观摩课课堂的教师话语的人际功能特点的可接受性,进而提出英语课堂上教师如何更好实现教师话语的人际意义以构建和谐师生关系的建议。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Most Chinese second language learners cannot be provided with a naturallanguage learning environment.For them,language is learned rather than acquired,and their language input mainly comes from the English teacher’s speech in class,thatis,the teacher talk hereby.Teacher talk plays an important role in English teachingand English learning.It is not only an important medium for teachers to implementtheir teaching plans,but also a significant source of language input for students.Itplays a crucial role in organizing classroom teaching activities as well as in learners’language acquisition process(Nunan,1991).

Moreover,not only the quantity but also the quality of teacher talk affects oreven determines the success or failure of classroom teaching(Hakansson,1986).Sofar,language scholars mainly focus on the studies of the amount of teacher talk,itstypes,characteristics or functions of teacher’s questions,feedback and errorcorrection,etc.,covering the theories of Pragmatics,Cognitive Linguistics,SecondLanguage Acquisition.However,studies of teacher talk in terms of interpersonalmeaning under the theoretical framework of Systematic Functional Linguistics and itsrelationship between teachers and students are a bit far from sufficiency.

1.2 Research Purpose

Based on the Interpersonal Function Theory of Systematic Functional Linguistics,this study explores the characteristics of the interpersonal meaning of teacher talk inthe English Demonstration Classes in junior middle school,with the English NormalClasses and the junior middle school students investigated as the auxiliary subjects.To be more specific,by comparing the similarities and differences in the realization ofteacher talk between the English Demonstration Classes and the English NormalClasses,the study aims to conclude and further highlight the characteristics of teachertalk in the English Demonstration Classes.By conducting a questionnaire surveyamong the middle school students on students’perceptions of teacher talk in Englishclassroom,the study aims to find out students’attitudes towards different means ofthe realization of the interpersonal function of teacher talk and proves theacceptability of the realization of interpersonal meaning of teacher talk in the EnglishDemonstration Classes,and find out what are the best means to realize theinterpersonal function of teacher talk from the perspective of the students.Bysummarizing the characteristics of teacher talk in English Demonstration Classes andthe students’perceptions of them,the study aims to find out solutions to better realizethe interpersonal function of teacher talk in middle school.The final purpose of thestudy is to help improve the quality of teacher talk in junior middle school Englishclassroom as well as the quality and effectiveness of English teaching.
