eo and Julie, Cinderella, and Hamlet. These great works are familiar to students and there are various roles for more students to have a try.
4.2.4 Hot-spot Debates
Teachers can divide the whole class into small groups of four or six, and give students several sensitive or hot topics to discuss. Each group gets a different topic and has about fifteen minutes to choose sides, formulate arguments, and hold the debate. Then the groups can change their topics. Some ideal topics are as follows:
- Is true love possible on the internet?
- Should boys do more duties than girls in class?
- Who is more important in a family, mother or father?
- Can Chinese and foreigners be married?
- What are your opinions about obeying your parents or following your own ideas?
These topics are very close to the students’ daily life, and students will be very active in stating their own opinions. Nobody wants to lose chances in debates, so they can do their best to help their teams win the game.
4.2.5 Jigsaw
Jigsaw activities are a bidirectional or multidirectional information gap. Each person in a pair or group has some information the other persons need. For example, one student could have a timetable for train travel in Canada. Another could have a map of Canada. Without showing each other the visual information, they much speak English to plan a one-week trip.
Many information gap and jigsaw activities can be done with simple props, such as coins. First, make sure each student in a class has a penny, a quarter, a nickel, and dime (or the coins of your country). Next, hide your coins so the students can’t see what you are doing. The students the follow your instructions as you do the actions you are describing: “place the quarter with the man’s picture facing up. Put the penny on the quarter. Put the dime below the quarter but not touching it. Put the penny on the nickel next to the dime on the right.” Finally, reveal the design you have made with your coins so the students can see if heir patterns match yours.
You can have the students use tango seating to work in pairs. In tango seating one student’s right shoulder is next to the other student’s right shoulder and they are facing opposite directions. This arrangement allows them to hear one another but not see what is being drawn or constructed on their partner’s desk.
The benefits of the jigsaw method are as following. First and foremost, it is a remarkably efficient way to learn the material. But even more important, the jigsaw process encourages listening, engagement, and empathy by giving each member of the group an essential part to play in the academic activity. Group members must work together as a group to accomplish a common goal; each person depends on all the others. No student can succeed completely unless everyone works well together as a group. This “cooperation by design” facilitates interaction among all students in the class, leading them to value each other as contributors to their common task.
4.2.6 Problem-solving
Problem-solving is one of the key techniques in developing the group’s capability. It makes demands upon the students’ reasoning po
