First Aid Supplies
Band aids and tissues are another important supply for middle school students. It is guaranteed that there will be at least three or four band aid requests per week and that many students with colds who will need tissues. Most likely more. Some wounds and colds are real, some imagined, but no sense arguing. A wound or a cold to might be barely detectable, but even at this age to them it is terminal. Give them a band aid. Let them get a tissue. They will feel better and everyone can get back to work.
Sanitary Supplies
Another supply advantageous for the willing to dispense, but certainly up to the teachers discretion, are sanitary items. Many middle schools no longer have a clinic or nurse. Therefore there may not be tampons or napkins available as there is no one around to monitor the stock. Female teachers, above all female gym teachers, will often be asked by students if they are available. This may be taboo to some, but the idea here is to keep students in class as much of the time as possible and know that tampon/napkin hunts can take up a remarkable amount of time. To prevent missed class work because of a natural need you may wish to have them available.
Overheads and Projectors
The amount of funding spent on digital equipment by your school, or district, will determine what technology you will have in your classroom. You will find many of the new teaching technology addressed in Chapter 7. However, whether it is a projector with an 'Elmo,' or the same overhead your teacher was using 15 years ago, there are some important classroom set up issues to remember.
From Power Point Jeopardy, to educational pod casts found on the web, projectors make utilizing digital visual aids a breeze. The problem is not all of this equipment is wireless...yet. Make sure that wires are tied together and they are not in the path of students. Otherwise they will trip over them. An unplugged wire along with a student not looking where he is going is an inevitable embarrassing situation that will instantaneously erupt a middle school classroom into fits of hysterical giggling and definitely disrupt an educators teaching groove. Worse yet, many a teacher has had expensive digital equipment damaged in the form of a student not looking, tripping over a wire, and the whole projector set-up crashing down. Another option to avoid such destruction is a moveable cart that plugs into the wall while all other wires are plugged into the cart. This avoids the issue of too many wires on the floor and decreases the chance of them getting accidentally pulled out or tripped over
.
Overheads, projectors, electrical carts and other similar types of equipment are kept in a tech room in the media center and need to be signed out. Teachers also will want to sign out a screen and have the custodian hang it from the ceiling in the front of the classroom or where all students will be facing. White boards may seem as effective as screens, but not always. Using a white board as a screen creates prevents teachers from writing on the board when using screens or even before. The slightest marks can distort projection whether from digital equipment or an overhead.
If you are unsure how to set up the equipment, ask your media specialist or IT guy, no one expects you to be familiar with equipment and they will probably be more than h
