This chapter is a very important part in this paper which provides the theoreticalsupport for this study. The researcher presents this chapter from the following aspects:the definition of the project-based approach, the basic components, the characteristics,the theoretical foundations, the relationship between project-based approach andwriting teaching and the domestic and foreign related research situation ofproject-based approach.
2.1 Project-based Approach
Project-based approach as one of the emerging teaching methods can be introducedspecifically in this part including the definitions of project, the definitions of PBA, thebasic components of PBA, the characteristics of PBA.The word “project” is often mentioned in economy, management, education andother fields whose application scope is widespread and the connotation is alsodiversified. It has different definitions in different areas. This research pays attentionto its definition in the education field.In the field of general education, the definition of “project” made by manyscholars pays attention to the process of learners’ participating, thinking andunderstanding in learning activities rather than the project results. Fried-Booth (1986)thinks that carrying out the project is a kind of process of developing little by little toachieve a specific goal. Katz and Chard (2000) claim that the content of project is tostudy a certain topic deeply and the implementation form of the project is usuallythrough the group cooperation. Kilpatrick (1918) regards project as a goal-directedperformance implemented in the book The Project Method which is written by him. Inother words, the project itself is the carrier and the media of teaching activities. In thefield of vocational education, Wu Yan (2003) thinks that the project refers to a taskthat students are asked to produce a product with concrete and practical applicationvalue. That is to say, the project is a comprehensive work whose goal is to complete aparticular product or specific task and the results or products of the project haverelatively high application value. In foreign language teaching, a project is a series ofextensive work tasks which combines language skills and the task to achieve acommon goal usually through some activities such as planning, information collection,reading, listening, interview, discussion, role play and so on (Wang Li, 2009).

2.2 Theoretical Foundations of Project-based Approach
In this part, three influential and significant teaching theories are introduced as thetheoretical foundations of the project-based approach by the researcher including theconstructivism, the theory of multiple intelligences and the cooperative learningtheory.Constructivism is a kind of theory about knowledge and learning which has theprofound influence on the education thought and caused a series of education reformmovements. The ideas of constructivism learning theory are very abundant in learningview, teaching view and knowledge view. Constructivism believes that learning is aprocess of self-regulation of solving the individual cognitive conflicts, and constructnew meaning under the mediation of the tools and symbols. And then through thecooperation of social activities, dialogue and discussion to further negotiate the newmeaning constructed and form a more advanced cognitive structure (He, Kekang,1997).
